Neurotology

Neurotology is a subspecialty of otolaryngology, the study of ear, nose, throat and neck conditions. Neurotology focuses specifically on neurological and balance disorders of the ears, the temporal bone, the base of the skull and related head and neck disorders.

Neurotologists treat both adults and pediatric patients. Neurotologists are trained to diagnose and treat medical conditions concerning balance, nerve function, infectious disease, and the anatomy of head and neck. Some of the conditions for which a patient might consult a neurotologist include:

  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Auditory and cranial nerve dysfunction
  • Congenital malformation of the ear
  • Dizziness
  • Ear infection or inflammation
  • Encephalocele
  • Facial nerve disorder
  • Glomus tumor
  • Meniere's disease
  • Meningioma
  • Tinnitus
  • Vestibular disorder

A neurotologist is a well-trained otolaryngologist, capable of diagnosis, treatment and surgery.
